Bali Woodfire Workshop
August 11-25, 2024
Heading 4
Peter Callas has forged a 50-year carer while logging over 160 Anagama firings, earning him a worldwide reputation for his pioneering work with this arcane process. At this workshop he will lead a firing in the Gaya Anagama where partcipants will benefit from his treasure trove of knowledge on stacking and firing for natural ash effects. Leading up to the loading of the kiln, Peter will demonstrate unique styles in slab and wheel skills, emphasizing one-of-a-kind forms and the sculptural challenges of abstracting vessels or constructing maquettes. His spirited and poetic approach will encourage students to handle clay in new and exciting ways. On his aesthetic philosophy he states, "Firing pieces with specific conditions in mind, the kiln functions as an engine for creative innovation, not just a furnace for finishing work." The workshop will also highlight a priemier viewing of two short documenary films: CALLAS: "LIFE ON FIRE" / VOULKOS:THE LOST TAPES"
